Our Story

Investing in young people offers one of the greatest possible returns.

FUTURES Foundation was established in 1985 when Volusia County Schools’ leadership recognized the need for a stronger, unified, countywide effort to support public education. With School Board support and careful research and planning, a direct-support private nonprofit was formed. Its Articles of Incorporation were filed March 14, 1985.

The first Board meeting was held March 21, 1985. The original 16-member board included respected business, civic, and community leaders, with district leadership serving ex officio to maintain close communication while preserving the Foundation’s autonomy.

The name FUTURES was inspired by the commodities market and a powerful belief: while there are no guarantees, investing in young people offers one of the greatest potential returns.

With an initial budget of $27,000, the Board began raising funds for innovative programs. Today, FUTURES manages an annual budget exceeding $800,000 and supports initiatives that directly impact students, teachers, and schools.

From scholarships and teacher support to classroom grants and leadership programs, FUTURES fills critical gaps that traditional funding cannot cover. Recognition programs celebrate excellence, boost morale, and strengthen pride in public education.

Over the years, FUTURES has helped transform the community’s role in education—from passive support to active, meaningful involvement. The success of our schools is a shared priority and a community investment.
